Why is toksta NOT using Flash?

Nowadays the use of Flash for a website is fairly common and is widely spread throughout Chat applications all across the web. Most of them are based on Flash in order to achieve quick results in a working production environment. Being one of the few Instant Messaging Applications out on the market that are based on JavaScript, we often get asked: “toksta, why don’t you guys use Flash?”.

This Article is for all Customers that have been wondering and I am going to show you why:

Flash on its own is a wonderfully interactive technology and can impress the viewer very easy, but on the other hand it has one major downturn: It is absolutely positioned. So in order to provide our customers with the impressions of Flash we have coded a Javascript frontend, which you all know as the toksta Instant messenger.

Choosing Javascript over Flash was an easy choice, because it enabled us to give the ability to Theme and redesign right into your hands. With our easy and intuitive interface we gave you  the ability to completely redesign our messenger with the power of CSSwhich entitles you do to pretty much do whatever you want!

With the pure force of style rules in CSS you have the possibility to move things around or even to completely replace them, when you want it. There is no further interaction needed but a Designer who knows his job to unleash the ultimate freedom we provide. And in order to give that freedom to our customers, we choose Javascript and CSS over Flash.

New servers are up and running

As we continue to grow it was time to expand our hardware capacities. So for the last couple of days our awesome server admin Frank did the magic and set up what you see below. He did also not forget to mention that all of our servers are in the same datacenter as the BCIX (Berlin Commercial Internet Exchange) and that we have:

  • several time redundant connections
  • redundant power supplies
  • hardware-loadbalancing
  • 100% open source software (linux for all servers and freebsd for the loadbalancers)
  • and a lot of other cool stuff that only admins understand… ;-)

toksta* integration now available for phpBB3

phpBB3 is one of the most popular bulletin boards for web communities. It’s a fully scalable and customizable, open source bulletin board package which is available under the GNU-GPL. Like its predecessors, phpBB 3.0 “Olympus” has an easy to use administration panel and a user friendly installation process, which allows you to have a forum set up in minutes.

With our new plugin (or modification) it is dead simple to integrate toksta* IM into your phpBB3 installation. To get your mod just register at toksta.com and go to the “implementation” area (”create script”) of our backend and select “phpBB3″.

Installing a Modification (MODX)
If you need help like: how to unzip, a description of what each file does, instructions on how to open the file in your browser, what each action means, the technique to install a MOD, what to do with FTP and backing up files, you will find here and here.
